A Video: How to Set Limits (that work)
Psst....it's about emotional health and connection and it will help your child and your home run so much more smoothly
Hi Parents,
How are you? Hanging in there? The COVID Summer of 2020 is not for the faint of heart. I am thinking of you all. A few weeks ago, I asked subscribers to share something that is challenging right now. I pulled a thread from those responses and made this video about setting limits (the Hand in Hand Parenting way).
As I say in the video, setting limits is tricky for most of us. What limits? How do I set a limit and stick with it? What do I do when my child pushes back on the limit? Why is my child acting this way in the first place? And my question is why did no one teach us this valuable way of setting limits from the very beginning? I don’t know about you but I used to be very frustrated with how hard it was to find good solid information on parenting well.
In this video I talk about:
Why our children’s behavior gets out of whack in the first place.
How to step in and set a limit without falling into the traps of being authoritarian or permissive.
How setting limits is key for your child’s emotional health.
How setting a couple of types of limits might look (a quick limit like intervening before a child hits another and a more unruly limit of how to rein in screen time).
How this takes practice. Listen to this, ask some questions, give it a try. You can do it.
This video is about 30 minutes long. You can sit and watch but also keep in mind that you can put in earbuds and listen from your phone while you rest, take a walk, do the dishes (are there always dishes to wash in your home too??). Earbuds are the way I get through most of the content I am wanting to hear.
You can click the title of this email to go over to wholeheartedfamily.substack.com and see all of my newsletters and videos and to comment or ask a question on this video. Do you have a parent friend or a parenting partner who could benefit from seeing this? Please do share. I want this parenting support and these tools to travel wide and far.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Love, Kate
