A Video: Why it is vital to build trust and safety
(because we want our children of all ages to come to us when they need help, not away from us)
Hi Parents,
I came across this yesterday and shared it on social media:
Whew, it made me slow down a take a breath. Isn’t this what we all want? Regardless of how we approach parenting, we want this - for the inevitable time when our child messes up, makes a bad choice, is hurt or upset about something. We want them to come to us, to trust *us* in these vulnerable moments, to *know* we will still see the good in them, our love will not waiver, we will listen, we will support. We will not yell, shame, punish, give the cold shoulder. We will, in these moments, show our children, that yes, our love is unconditional. And that is why they will come to us, but we can’t just say “you can come to me with anything”, we have to build that trust. And it happens over time with our day in and day out choices.
I love this so much I made a video about it. Because it’s one thing to see a meme on social media, it’s a whole other thing to live it. I wanted to dig into the idea of why some children come to their parents and some go to their peer group or away from their parents. Take a listen - you can watch or just put in earbuds for a little adult time while you do the dishes or better yet lie down for a rest.
If this helped you in any way, will you share it? I think it is something that we all want to get right and I want to help. Thank you.

Are you in this with me? I am in it with you. The world is resting on parents shoulders right now during this pandemic. It’s not an easy time and yet, our kids are always tuned in to see and feel what is safe, who is safe and who is not. Let’s be on their side. They feel what is going on in the world, they feel the tension, the differences in life, let’s be a soft place to land.
Hang in there parents. More soon.
Love, Kate
