Friday Roundup: 5 Inspiring and Helpful Items
Hi Parents,
It’s Friday and that brings my weekly roundup of helpful and/or inspiring items for you to peruse.
Most of us are thinking a lot about how to keep our children and our family safe during the age of COVID-19. Read more here for ideas on using connection to keep your family thriving during this difficult time.
“The coronavirus forces parents to weigh their kids’ safety against the need for freedom — a tension Black parents have been contending with for generations” A worthy article for white parents.
My idea of a true getaway would include a load of time to read. With so much time at home these days (these months), this list of travel memoirs really caught my attention. I currently have this one on hold at the library. But I am still wrapped up in Americanah this week.
I love to cook. This little recipe was delish and all the kids ate it too! You can freeze it so I think I will double or triple this soon and freeze a bunch. I added a lemony tahini dressing drizzled over the top. Yum.
Are you familiar with Cal Newport? He writes about the intersection of technology and culture. He says on his website: “I’m particularly interested in our struggles to deploy these tools in ways that support instead of subvert the things we care about.” This is a near daily, but definitely weekly part of my thinking. How to use technology as a positive tool and resource and not one that interrupts and distracts us from what is most important? How to model the appropriate use of technology to our kids (of all ages)? I have a lot more to come on tech, social media, devices and more. Cal is a great resource on this topic. He also has a podcast which I have been listening to on my early morning walks this week. I think it is worth mentioning that he is a computer science professor at Georgetown (with his PhD from MIT) and he is all about digital minimalism. He even wrote a New York Times best-selling book about it.
Lastly, a little ‘how to’ for this platform, substack. At the top of my email, you can click on the title of my email, the little heart or the little comment box and you will be taken over to my substack website where you can read and comment on this post or look back at any past posts. The heart lets me know you liked this. You can also click a heart on any comments. Sharing anything that I write with others via email or on social media is like giving me a big hug. Questions? Just reach out!
That’s all for this week friends. I hope you have a weekend ahead that is full of connection, laughter and deep rest.
Love, Kate
